Area(s) of expertise :

The RIO team research area concerns network protocols mainly for the Internet of Things (IoT). It aims in particular to study  the recent generation of wireless and mobile networks (4G, LTE, 5G, 6G, and beyond ...), the self-organization of these networks in mobility scenarios (ad hoc networks, sensors and robots), and the interactions with Fog or Cloud infrastructures. The main objectives are to improve quality of service (QoS), Quality of Experience (QoE), multi-hop routing techniques, virtualization of network functions, software networks, system deployment, and cyber-physical networks (sensor networks and robot networks in particular). To carry out these objectives, the team uses network simulation tools (NS3, Qualnet, ...), grid calculations e.g. GRID'5000, IoT platforms (FIT IoT lab, ThinkSpeak,...), virtualization techniques (SDN, Network Slicing,...), Information theory (correcting codes, multiple description coding, network coding, ...) as well as artificial intelligence tools for designing cognitive networks. Software and hardware deployments are carried out as well (example: deployment of a network of sensors measuring the evaporation of water in the salt marshes of Guérande). Security, a real challenge of the Internet of Things, is a transversal axis to the team that covers all 3 topics. The main application areas are telecommunications, smart city, transport, health, industry of the future, agriculture ...
